Maria and Bonifacio Lopez of Providence, Rhode Island, made energy-efficient upgrades to their house, which is divided into three dwelling units. This should save them $622 per unit annually, according to the National Energy Audit Tool. The Lopezes worked with the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative, which streamlines local, state, and federal programs, serving as a one-stop shop for families in need of services to ensure homes are green, healthy, and safe.

Mount Carmel West Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, reduced its annual energy use by more than 2.5 million kilowatt-hours, saving nearly $200,000 annually. Energy efficiency upgrades included replacing thousands of fluorescents with more efficient T-8 bulbs, installing new air-handling unit controls, and more. Rebates from the Columbus Southern Power utility reduced the overall project cost by 17 percent.

Barbara Rasor weatherized her house and installed a more efficient heating system, thanks to the Help My House program offered by Aiken Electric Cooperative, her power provider in South Carolina. Aiken gave her a loan for the work, which Rasor is repaying via her monthly power bill.
